We currently have two stretches of water for members
to fish. Both are situated just outside Mold. Both
require a different approach to fly-fishing.
|
The first water is Pistyll Pool, a beautiful lake
just under an acre in size and is situated approximately
one mile from the centre of Mold. Pistyll is a mature
stillwater and is regularly stocked with Rainbow and
Blue trout.
The lake holds a sizeable number of indigenous brown
trout and is occasionally stocked with tiger trout.
Fish sizes range from 1 lb right up to double figures.
Most fish are in the 2-3 lb range.
|
 |
Clean, fresh springwater from nearby hills feeds
the lake and its depth varies - reaching over thirty
feet in places. Fish can be found at all depths -
often at the surface during the summer months - which
leads to some fantastic dry fly sport.
|
All areas of the lake are accessible and over the
years, members have created a professional, landscaped
venue. The lake has its own lodge, providing a place
for people to relax.

 |
The second water is a two mile beat on the River
Alyn. This a picturesque river that is fed by gin
clear streams from the surrounding area. The resident
wild brown trout provide a real challenge on light
river fly outfits. You may also want to try your hand
at fishing for grayling during the winter months.
|
Most methods of fly-fishing are allowed on both waters
(except boobies). Patterns that consistently produce
fish at Pistyll include daddies, grey dusters, hawthorn,
buzzers, damsels, hare's ears and cat's whiskers (to
name but a few).
Water visibility is good and at times it is gin clear
requiring the use of a long leader and a careful approach.
|
 |
Fishing the Alyn requires a lighter approach with
more delicate river tackle for the smaller wild browns.
Small, dry patterns usually work well during the spring
and summer months.
|
 |
As you would expect, maintaining a sizeable headcount
of healthy trout is extremely important and, in that
context, members are requested to fish with barbless
hooks and encouraged to return fish that they catch.
These initiatives, combined with a 4 fish per month
bag limit and regular stocking ensure that club waters
are full of high quality, healthy trout.

We have exciting future plans for the club.
During 2005, we are actively involved in adding three
new still waters to our list. Situated in the Mold
area, the complex of three pools will offer outstanding
sport for members from the 2006 season onwards.
We are also involved in negotiations for a further
venue which, if successful, would provide all year
round fishing at an attractive venue near Mold.
